Wrist-mounted, Watch-style GPS units have come a Long, long Way.

Garmin Foretrex 401 Waterproof Hiking GPS

The Garmin Foretrex 401 wrist-mounted GPS includes an upgraded design, is lighter and smaller than any of its predecessors and, though designed primarily for military use, is also perfect for moving through jungle, rivers, snow, mountains, deserts or forests. In fact, for whenever you need to keep both hands free but still want to keep track of where you are, and where you are going.

The Foretrex 401 features a 1.7-inch (4.32 cm) backlit LED display screen (64 x 100 pixels), a single handed operational system utilizing five buttons (ergonomically placed) for easier and quicker mobility and a highly sensitive receiver (with HotFix) which delivers fast and strong signal reception regardless of where you are. The backlighting on the screen is handy for using in poor lighting conditions, and the display is dual-position enabling you to check it out in multiple format, vertically or horizontally.
A unique new addition, to this model, is the ability to link wirelessly with other Foretrex 401 units enabling you to easily share way points and routes with other people in your vicinity by using the ANT communication feature. The 401 can store 10 000 trackpoints and 500 waypoints (name and graphic symbols) while navigating 20 reversible journeys.
This Garmin model also hosts a USB jack (for transferring data to and from your PC), electronic digital compass (2-axis), barometric altimeter and a Jumpmaster mode for static, with HALO and HAHO allowing you to set data points. Other functions include TracBac (which allows you to look at your route and follow it back to your starting point), Trip computer (which works out your speeds and distance) and options for wind speed altitude and forward throw. You can also plot out your route on Google Earth by using Garmin Connect. If you are racing on water, the sail race function mode even has a start countdown sequence with sound alerts at each phase of the start.
The Garmin Foretrex 401 GPS navigator weighs in at just 85 grams, attaches securely to your wrist with its durable strap and can be submerged in 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes.
Like we said, GPS units have come a long way.
