Founded in 1994 the company initially envisaged selling only books online, but quickly developed into a seller of all things including gadgets, electronics, computers, home goods, watches, toys, luxury items, gifts and even food. Essentially if it's for sale, it's for sale on Amazon Dot Com.
The name was chosen as the founder wanted a name starting with the letter A and it must have a Z. The logo, which looks like a smile below the word Amazon, also points A to Z, to show that they literally sell everything. What separates Amazon is that they not only sell goods, but have become manufacturers of products too. Their Kindle is the current leader in the online ereader field. They also do memory cards, hdmi cables and a variety of other essential items as part of the Amazon basics range.
Further, they offer web services such as cloud computing, and services to other retailers.
Sadly most items on their website do not ship to South Africa, but this is where Have2Have gets involved and can assist in having virtually any item in stock and sold by Amazon Dot com delivered in South Africa.

Being able to search the Kindle Store for books and then download a sample is great. I searched for one of my favourite authors, downloaded the sample (which was surprisingly long)and then bought the book directly on the Kindle after reading the sample. The built in wireless connection direct to Kindle is brilliant and works extremely well, even here in South Africa, but perhaps not quite in the 60 seconds claimed by Amazon.
I now have a new found interest in reading and look forward to taking it with me when I travel, rather than carting books around or not bothering to read while away.
The feature that allows reading material to be organized into "Collections" is very handy and the basic web browser, although limited to text, is useful.
It is just a pity that the newspapers and magazines available through the Kindle Store do not include graphics for subscribers outside the USA, and that there is no South African content or subscriptions available.
With so many magazines now being published on-line in PDF format it is so easy to download to a computer and then transfer them to the Kindle for reading anywhere, without having to be at a computer.
If and when a colour screen version is released I think I will be one of the first in line to buy it, price permitting.
